Dear Ms. Davidow,
I’m writing to introduce myself to you and to give you few information about my experiences, interests, and background. I have been in New York for about a year now and this is my first year at City College. Previously, I lived in Idaho where I did my first year of college and made amazing friends. Starting new in New York wasn’t easy but now, I feel much comfortable and happy about exciting things that I am part of, such as participating in different club activities and meeting new people with similar interests as me. I’m eager to learn, to get your expertise on my writing along with improving my public- speaking skills and be a well-spoken person.
I come from a South Asian country Nepal, where I was born and raised so, my first language is Nepali, and I am also fluent in English and Hindi. I was privileged enough to be raised in a city with proper education and other facilities compared to many underprivileged places in Nepal. I always knew I had much bigger dreams to chase and a strong passion to follow so, besides loving my country and my culture, I traveled thousands of miles to United States for better quality education and opportunities. This transition of mine came with many challenges of its own but being raised by a strong independent woman like my mother, it has taught me, any opportunities given shall not be taken for granted and I can proudly say she has raised a strong independent woman determined to achieve her goals.
I chose City College of New York because the Grove School of Engineering is considered one of the best engineering schools in New York. In this college, I plan to get the best education and guidance while sharpening my problem-solving abilities and learn about the pressing global challenges. The main goal of mine is to get more knowledge on sustainable construction plans and proper waste management, which has been one of the biggest challenges in the engineering field.
Growing up in a family surrounded by contractors, it exposed me to the construction environment and supervising the construction sites with my father and grandfather led me towards my interest in civil engineering. Even though my parents and grandparents came from a tiny village with no access to education, I am always amazed by their abilities to build impressive structures. A meaningful experience I had was to travel in Nepal where the dangerous road conditions, failure of proper construction planning and lack of infrastructures was affecting the lives of thousands. Those places neither have enough transportation facilities, nor safe roads to reach many destinations so, people living in those areas do not have access to varieties of food, clean water, or even proper electricity. I was able to see the struggles of the people there which made me more invested in bringing advanced structures for the roads and buildings with safer approach providing them with more opportunities in future.
For my career, I would like to be a civil engineer working to provide clean water supply, construct safe roads, bridges, buildings, and proper waste management to make people’s life easier by giving them access to basic needs in Nepal and many other countries with poor infrastructures.
Sincerely,
Niky Subedi
